Portsmouth is a historic coastal city steeped in history - as well as being the birthplace of authors Charles Dickens and H G Wells, it is the home of the historic Royal Naval dockyard - home of Nelson's flagship the Victory, HMS Warrior and the submarine museum. There are many miles of coastline to be explored and beautiful countryside with quaint villages and good pubs.
New attractions include the Gunwharf Quays complex, with shops, restaurants, cinemas and the spectacular Spinnaker Tower, the tallest accessible building in the UK outside London, with 260 views from its 170m viewing platform.
London is an hour and a half away (travel for £1 on SW trains out of peak time offer!) also there are many places easily within reach, including Stonehenge, Bath, Brighton, Isle of Wight, New Forest National Park. France can be easily reached for day trips by ferry or catamaran
