On a country lane near Condat and adjoining our own home, we have a traditional Auvergnat farmhouse known as a longère. Sleeping 4, it has metre thick stone walls, massive beams, two bedrooms, a shower room, a big living room with fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, big fridge) and a wood burning fire in the old hearth.
Comfy beds (in the main bedroom a romantic lit-clos, 6' 6" x 5', and two 6' 3" x 3' beds in the second bedroom), plenty of cupboard space, non-allergic bedding, lots of hot water and a roomy shower. The Longère has a dishwasher, washing machine, large fridge and microwave as well as a high-speed wireless internet connection. And like all my houses, it has a phone.
Enjoy one of the many books in a comfy armchair by the fire or sit in the shade of the old lime tree with a glass of wine. Whatever the time of year, you’ll enjoy the Longère’s comfort and charm. In hot weather, the thick walls keep the inside deliciously cool. For winter there’s a large central heating radiator in the main room, electric radiators throughout and a hefty wood-burning stove.
Shops in Condat are 5 minutes. There are chateaux, museums, mountain bikes for hire, Romanesque churches, street markets, medieval towns, waterfalls, lakes, swimming pools and magical walking; down hill and cross country skiing in winter, a summer bob luge (cable cars run to 5,800 ft on the Massif du Sancy) or pedal along the old railway line through the high country on a Vélorail. And it's France.... wine, a memorable meal for under £10, local paté, smoked sausage and ham. And Cantal's high pastures also produce no less than 10 appellation cheeses, more than any other French départment.
No need for a glass of Avèze, the locally distilled gentian roots, to send you to sleep at night!
