Lydford House Hotel

Lydford House is a family run Country House standing in 8 acres of beautiful gardens and pasture land. Offering a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, Lydford House has been welcoming guests for over 100 years and was built by the celebrated artist William Widgery.

We offer nine spacious well-equipped ensuite bedrooms, all of which have tea & coffee making facilities, hairdryers, colour TV, and most having free access to broadband wireless internet. A twin ground floor room is available and one of our superior rooms has a four-poster. The house is surrounded by extensive gardens and grounds where you can stroll and get to know some of our resident horses, hens, cats and goats or sit on the patio next to the ponds and relax to the peaceful sound of the waterfalls and enjoy a cream tea. On cooler evenings have a glass of wine or beer around the log fire in our elegant guest lounge.

Set within Dartmoor National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, there is much to see and do in the immediate vicinity as well as further afield in the beautiful counties of Devon and Cornwall. The village of Lydford dates back to King Arthur in the 9th century who built a fort here, the site of which is now occupied by Lydford Castle which was erected in 1195. Beside the castle stands St Petroc's church, named after a Celtic missionary. The present church dates from the 13th Century, look out for the Watchmaker's Tomb with its famous inscription. Lydford Gorge belonging to the National Trust attracts over 75,000 visitors a year. It is a haven to plant and wildlife. The gorge is a magnificent walk and includes the 100 foot waterfall White Lady and the swirling whirl pools of the Devil's Cauldron. There are a plethora of excellent rural eating houses both in Lydford and neighboring villages, we are more than happy to recommend and reserve tables for you should you require. The market town of Oakhampton is 7 miles from Lydford and also has a castle established by the Norman's and rebuilt in the 14th century. The remains owned by English Heritage are the largest of their kind in Devon. The town has an interesting Victorian Shopping Arcade and the Museum of Dartmoor Life is worth a visit.
